1. Fable

Fable ialah jenis narrative teks yang menceritakan binatang. Berikut contoh Narrative Text jenis Fabel dan penjelasannya:

The Mouse Deer and the Tiger

One day, there was a mouse deer. He was thirsty so he wanted to drink on the river. (Orientation)
When the mouse deer came next to the river, a tiger approached him and wanted to eat him. Of course the mouse deer tried to escape, but the tiger run faster and caught him.
In that dangerous situation the mouse deer thought hard how to escape the tiger. Then he got idea and said to the tiger, “Listen! Your mightiness and toughness are all great! But I have my own king. He has a greater strength than yours! I am sure that nobody can match his powers!” Because the tiger felt taunted, he declared that he would challenge the mouse deer’s king. (Complication)
Next the Mouse leads the tiger to the river, and said, “Now Look at the water. You will see my king” Foolishly the tiger looked in the river and surely saw another tiger in the water. Then he growled, but the tiger in the river imitated to growl too. Because of his too high self pride, the tiger jumped into the water, and wanted to fight. He was believed there was another tiger in the water.
The mouse deer took that opportunity to escape. After fighting with himself in the river, the tiger realized that he was fooled by the mouse deer. (Resolution)

2. Myth

Myth ialah cerita mitos yang banyak diketahui oleh masyarakat dan sudah dianggap sebagai suatu fakta atau cerita yang benar–benar terjadi. Berikut contoh Narrative Text jenis Myth dan penjelasannya:

Aji Saka and Dewata Cengkar

Many years ago, the kingdom of Medang Kamulan was ruled by a king named Dewata – Chengkar. This king had a strange and frightening habit. He liked to eat human beings. (Orientation)
One day, a young traveler arrived in the Kingdom. He was called Ajisaka. Ajisaka took shelter in the house of a widow who quickly came to look upon the young man as her own son. When he heard of the king’s strange appetite, Ajisaka sympathized with the villagers’ plight and immediately volunteered to become the king’s next meal.
Ajisaka went directly to the king’s palace. “I am willing to be your next meal. Your Highness. However, I have a request.“ said Aji Saka to the king. “Whatever you please, young man, I will grant your request,“ the king replied. “Before you eat me, grant me some land. Just enough length of my own head cloth.“ continued Aji Saka. “Come, Young Man. Let’s measure your head cloth so that I can have my meal and you can have your land“ agreed the king. Ajisaka began to unwrap the cloth tied around his head. The king got down from his throne and hold one end of the head cloth. He stepped backward. What he didn’t know was that this head Cloth was much longer. (Complication)
The king kept going backward, step by step, as the cloth kept unraveling. He stepped backward through the palace square, backward across the village, holding the end of Aji Saka’s head cloth. The king kept stepping backward until reached the sea clifts of the sea.
A great crowd of people had gathered. They held their breath as their king took his final step backward over the cliff’s edge and plunged into the waves crashing against the rocks at the foot of the sea wall. (Resolution)

3. Legend

Legend atau legenda ialah cerita rakyat yang mengisahkan bagaimana asal-usul sesuatu itu ada. Berikut contoh Narrative Text jenis Legend dan penjelasannya:

The Legend of Surabaya

A long time ago, there were two animals, Sura and Baya. Sura was the name of a shark and Baya was a crocodile. They lived in a sea. (Orientation)
Once Sura and Baya were looking for some food. Suddenly, Baya saw a goat “Yummy, this is my lunch,” said Baya. “No way! This is my lunch. You are greedy” said Sura. Then they fought for the goat. After several hours, they were very tired. (Complication)
Feeling tired of fighting, they lived in the different places. Sura lived in the water and Baya lived in the land. The border was the beach, so they would never fight again. One day, Sura went to the land and looked for some food in the river. He was very hungry and there was not much food in the sea. Baya was very angry when he knew that Sura broke the promise. They fought again.
They both hit each other. Sura bit Baya’s tail. Baya did the same thing to Sura. He bit very hard until Sura finally gave up and went back to the sea. Baya was happy. (Resolution)

4. Folk tale

Folk tale atau cerita rakyat ialah teks yang diceritakan secara turun-temurun sehingga menjadi suatu bagian dari tradisi masyarakat. Berikut contoh Narrative Text jenis Folk Tale dan penjelasannya:

Golden Eggs

Long time ago a remote village, in central China was inhabited mainly with farmers and hunters. (Orientation)
One day, a poor farmer lost his entire livestock to flood. He prayed hard to God for help or his family would die of starvation. Few days later, an old man with long grey beard, passed by his house took pity on him. He gave him a goose and said “ I don’t have any expensive thing to give you and hope this goose will help you to ease your hardship.” A week later to almost surprise the farmer found and egg in his yard. (Complication)
This was no ordinary egg. It was a golden egg. He was suddenly overcome with joy. Thereafter, his livelihood had rapidly improved but the farmer had forgotten his earlier hardship. He became lazy, arrogant and spendthrift. Strangely, the goose only laid one golden egg every six months.
The greedy farmer lost his patient and slaughtered his goose thinking there were plenty of golden eggs inside its stomach. Though he very much regretted for his foolishness, it’s already too late. (Resolution)

5. Fairy tales

Fairy tales atau dongeng merupakan cerita anak-anak atau rakyat yang mengandung unsur keajaiban atau ketakjuban terhadap para tokoh dan biasanya di akhir cerita mengandung pesan moral. Berikut contoh Narrative Text jenis Fairy Tale dan penjelasannya:

Thumbelina

Once upon a time, there was a kind woman who had no children, longed for a baby and would often say, “How I would love to have a baby girl, even a tiny little one.” A beautiful fairy heard her wish one day, and gave her a little seed to plant in a flowerpot. (Orientation)
When the seed bloomed into a tulip, the woman saw a tiny, beautiful girl inside, no bigger than her thumb. She decided to call her Thumbelina. She was so small that she had a walnut shell for a bed and used petals as a blanket. Then, an ugly toad fell in love with Thumbelina.
One night when she was sleeping, he carried her off to his lily pad in a pond. Thumbelina was very unhappy. A swallow was passing by and saw how sad she looked, and said, “Come south with me to warmer lands.” Young Thumbelina flew away on the swallow’s back. They flew across the seas and came to a land of sunshine. The swallow said, ” This is my home. (Complication)
You can live in one of the loveliest and biggest flowers.” When Thumbelina stepped inside, she found a handsome fairy, as tiny as her, in its heart.He was the son of the king of flowers and he fell in love with Thumbelina. He asked her to marry him. So Thumbelina became queen of the flowers and the two lived happily ever after. (Resolution)

6. Love story

Cerita cinta merupakan sebuah cerita yang berisi perjuangan tokoh utama dalam memperjuangkan cintanya. Berikut contoh Narrative Text jenis Love Story dan penjelasannya:

Romeo and Juliet

In the town of Verona there lived two families, the Capulets and the Montagues. They engaged in a bitter feud. Among the Montagues was Romeo, a hot-blooded young man with an eye for the ladies. (Orientation) One day, Romeo attended the feast of the Capulets’, a costume party where he expected to meet his love, Rosaline, a haughty beauty from a well-to-do family. Once there, however, Romeo’s eyes felt upon Juliet, and he thought of Rosaline no more.
The vision of Juliet had been invading his every thought. Unable to sleep, Romeo returned late that night to the Juliet’s bedroom window. There, he was surprised to find Juliet on the balcony, professing her love for him and wishing that he were not a “Montague”, a name behind his own. “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Romeo was ready to deny his name and professed his love. The two agreed to meet at nine o’clock the next morning to be married. (Complication)
Early the next morning, Romeo came to Friar Lawrence begging the friar to marry him to Juliet. The Friar performed the ceremony, praying that the union might someday put an end to the feud between the two families. He advised Romeo kept the marriage a secret for a time.
On the way home, Romeo chanced upon his friend Mercutio arguing with Tybalt, a member of the Capulet clan. That quarreling last caused Merquito died. Romeo was reluctant no longer. He drew his sword and slew Tybalt died. Romeo realized he had made a terrible mistake. Then Friar Lawrence advised Romeo to travel to Mantua until things cool down. He promised to inform Juliet. In the other hand, Juliet’s father had decided the time for her to marry with Paris. Juliet consulted Friar Lawrence and made a plot to take a sleeping potion for Juliet which would simulate death for three days. The plot proceeded according to the plan. Juliet was sleeping in death.
Unfortunately, The Friar’s letter failed to reach Romeo. Under the cover of darkness, he broke into Juliet’s tomb. Romeo kissed the lips of his Juliet one last time and drank the poison. Meanwhile, the effects of the sleeping potion wear off. Juliet woke up calling for Romeo. She found her love next to her but was lying dead, with a cup of poison in his hand. She tried to kiss the poison from his lips, but failed. Then Juliet put out his dagger and plunged it into her breast. She died. (Resolution)
